What is a Monitoring Point?
A Monitoring Point is a named location on your site where you measure. Devices come and go; the Monitoring Point stays. Your data, rules, media triggers, notes and reports attach to the point, not to the device that happens to be there.
Point and device are different things
A device is the hardware: a SiteHive Hexanode with a serial number. A Monitoring Point is a place on the map with a name. When you set a device up in SiteHive Enviro, you assign it to a Monitoring Point for a period of time. Swap the device for a freshly calibrated one and assign the replacement to the same point, and the record continues without a break. Move a device to a new place and it gets a new point; the old point keeps everything it recorded.
A Monitoring Point can have one or more devices over time, and more than one at once (for example a Noise+Dust device and a Vibration device at the same fence post).
What attaches to a Monitoring Point
Data and graphs. The Dashboard map shows the latest values at each point, and Reporting > Graphs lets you graph by Monitoring Point to compare locations.
Rules and notifications. Thresholds are set per point, so a boundary point and a receiver point can have different limits.
Media triggers. The LAmax level that captures photos and audio is set per point.
Daily notes. Tag a note to the point it concerns and it is reported against that location.
Reports. PDF and CSV reports are organised by Monitoring Point.
Position and orientation. The point has a position on the map; the device at it has an orientation, which Direction of Arrival depends on.
Naming a Monitoring Point
Use the name people on site already use: North boundary fence, Receiver R3 Smith St, Site office.
Name the place, not the device. Serial numbers change when a device is swapped; the place does not.
Keep it short. Names appear in graph legends, notification emails and report tables.
If the same spot carries two aspects, one point is enough; the aspect is a property of the device, not the point.
Where you see Monitoring Points
The Dashboard side panel lists them, with status symbols, and the map places them.
The Manage window opens on a Monitoring Point view (its devices, rules, media triggers and setup) or a Device view.
Settings > Devices & Monitoring Points lists every point and device on the site.
Reporting > Graphs, with Graph by Monitoring Point.
Create, move or end a Monitoring Point
Points are created during Easy Setup, when you assign a device to a new location. To change dates, move a device to another point or end its time at one, use Device actions in the Manage window. If a location changes, create a new point rather than renaming an old one: the history of each place stays clean.
What's next
Add a device with Easy Setup (create a Monitoring Point and assign a device to it)
Edit, end or move a device (dates, orientation, moving between points)
Graph your data (compare Monitoring Points over time)
